The R.A. Hart scholarship was established with the passing of his daughter Dorothy who bequeathed a $10,000 grant to the Foundation. She had been a long-time resident and employee of Puget Sound Power & Light in Bothell during an era when the company maintained a business presence in the local community.

Richard Alexander Hart was born in London, Ontario, Jan. 24, 1876. After his marriage to Margaret and the birth of two of their three children, Dorothy and Douglas, the Harts moved from Vancouver, B.C. to Bothell in 1920 and later became naturalized U.S. citizens in 1939.  He worked in men's furnishings in Cheasty's, a downtown Seattle firm. Their son Rich was born in 1923 on a six-acre homestead the Hart family had developed into a farm.
R.A. Hart loved the country and fancied himself a gentleman farmer. A flower lover, Richard grew many varieties, including roses and peonies. He also grew vegetables for his family and planted dozens of fruit trees, including 30 pie cherry trees that were harvested and sold to local canneries. The Hart family raised chickens and sold their eggs to the Washington Cooperative Egg & Poultry Ass'n.
Mr. Hart belonged to the Masonic Order and the Royal Arch and was an active member of the Bothell United Methodist Church, which he joined in 1923. In 1955, after more than 30 years, he retired from J.C. Penney Co. and died in 1965 at the age of 89. His daughter Dorothy started the scholarship, not only to honor his memory, but also to give others the opportunity that her father had given her.
