Record number of scholarships

to be awarded for academic 2007-08

Northshore Scholarship Foundation will honor a record number 89 local high school and college students with $147,910 in scholarships for academic year 2007-08. The recipients have been invited to the Foundation’s 23rd annual recognition breakfast to be held at the Northshore Senior Center in Bothell on May 23.

The annual recognition event is sponsored by the Foundation’s “operators”, the Northshore and Woodinville Rotary clubs and Kiwanis Club of Northshore.

“A total of 1,126 students have received scholarships since the 1984 inception of this unique community resource,” Foundation President Eric Barnum noted. “Its success is due to the careful management of individual scholarship endowment funds and the high level of cooperation among the three community service clubs that support the work of this Foundation.”

The Foundation and service clubs have awarded a total of $1,264,020 in grants for tuition and fees. The Foundation’s asset base exceeds $1,275,000.

Five new scholarships are being offered this year as memorials and tributes to community leaders. They are:

 the Jan Allott Liberal Arts scholarship provided through an endowment established by the long-time Kenmore activist;
          BJ Brown Memorial for a Bothell High School graduate who exemplifies the “can do” spirit of the 2006 graduate;
          Pat Matthews Continuing Education award for a Northshore district paraeducator seeking teaching certification or technical qualifications;
          Marv Workman business scholarship at University of Washington Bothell for a Woodinville High School graduate;
          and the Rusty Young Community Leadership Award for a Northshore graduate with a strong record of community and school service.

The Foundation’s 50th endowment account will be announced at the breakfast as a memorial to former school superintendent Lee Blakely. Memorials and family contributions were made this year to establish a scholarship to be first awarded in 2008. The Foundation maintains 50 individual accounts from which the scholarships are funded.

          A complete list of the 2007 scholarship awards will be posted on the Foundation website following the breakfast.
