Since joining the Foundation in 1988, Woodinville Rotary has invested more than $600,000 in college scholarships and in seven endowment-style accounts within the Northshore Scholarship Foundation. The accounts include: (1) contributed $35,000 to establish its own scholarship account from 1988 to 2003. (2) contributed $30,000 to establish a scholarship account in memory of past president, charter member and community leader Jerry Wilmot. (3) The club contributed $24,250 to start and build the Theater Arts Scholarship fund in tribute to the dynamic community theater activist Peg Phillips, founder of Woodinville Repertory Theater and a character actor in the hit television series "Northern Exposure". (4) contributed $10,500 to establish the Marv Cook memorial scholarship for math education. Marv was a popular math teacher at Woodinville High School. (5) Contributed and helped raise $41,570 for the Marv Workman memorial business scholarship program at University of Washington Bothell. Marv was a charter member and past president of Woodinville Rotary and served as a founding member of the scholarship foundation, serving many years as its treasurer. (6) Devoted proceeds from its auction of 2006 to establish a $25,000 account for 21 Acres Education programs with the annual proceeds provided 21 Acres for its agriculture and sustainable living projects. (7) Contributed to and helped raise $25,600 for an account in memory of Katherine E. (Betsey) Hughes, daughter of Rotarians John and Nan Hughes. Proceeds from the account will be devoted to providing educational support for someone working in the field of mental health and at housing facilities for those coping with mental illness. In addition the club donated $5,000 to help establish the Julian Karp Emerging Scholar award given in memory of the late superintendent of Northshore schools. It also contributed to the endowment in memory of Kenmore Air Harbor founder and past Foundation trustee Bob Munro a charter member of Northshore Rotary.
The club annually provides between $25,000 and $35,000 in scholarships with money raised through Rotary dinner auctions, the annual charity-fund raising event being held each October. These have included: Woodinville High School and SAS Woodinville Rotary offers Make A Difference renewable scholarships for graduates at Woodinville High School and Secondary Academy for Success who otherwise would not have the opportunity financially to continue their education beyond high school. The value is $3,500 for a recipient attending a two-year college and $7,500 for a recipient attending a four-year institution. University of Washington Bothell $ 2,500 for the Jerry Wilmot Memorial Business Management Scholarship for a graduate student in the master's program at University of Washington branch at Bothell. $ 2,000 for the Marv Workman Business scholarship for a student accepted for and enrolled in upper division business studies. The scholarship is renewable for the second or senior year. Cascadia Community College $ 2,000 for a scholarship to a Woodinville High School graduating senior who will enroll at Cascadia Community College with plans to obtain an A.A. degree at Cascadia and then transfer to one of the five degree-granting programs at UW-Bothell. Woodinville Wine Industry $ 2,000 for a student preparing for careers in the Woodinville and state's fast growing wine industry. The scholarship is open for applicants enrolled in or planning to attend the Northwest Wine Academy at South Seattle Community College, the viticulture and enology program at Walla Walla and Yakima Community Colleges or Washington State University. The grant is for a student serious about following a career in the state and Woodinville's fast-growing wine industry. The scholarship is advertised in the spring for the fall quarter. Club Oversight Woodinville Rotary also provides oversight in the funding and selection of the following scholarship endowments: Malinowski-Marston Communications Arvid K. Woodinville and Rotary scholarships
Nine graduating seniors from Woodinville High School and one from
Secondary Academy for Success were among 60 recipients of 2012
scholarships sponsored by Woodinville Rotary Club and awarded May 22 at
the 28th annual Northshore Scholarship Foundation recognition
breakfast.
Five Woodinville
graduates presently attending college had their scholarships renewed.
The Foundation
presented scholarships totaling $132,500 for academic year 2012-13 which
brought the total value of grants made since 1984 to $2,006,870. Next year
will mark the award of the 1,500th scholarship since the
Foundation was started by Northshore Rotary Club, later joined in
sponsorship by Kiwanis Club of Northshore and the Woodinville Rotary Club.
Woodinville
seniors honored at the event (with name of scholarship) were William Mason
(Shawn Gardner memorial), Keelin Davis (Nick Jewett memorial softball),
Andrea Shaw (Knoll-Worthington memorial business), Sarah Hubert (Peg
Phillips memorial theater arts), Conner Kummerlowe and Benjamin Wineman
(Woodinville Rotary achievement), Shayla Dorstad and Ashleigh Watson
(Woodinville Rotary Make a Difference), Brett Arrivey (Pop Keeney memorial
football).
Daniel Beltran,
Secondary Academy senior, received the Woodinville Rotary Make a
Difference renewable scholarship.
Woodinville
Rotary renewed the scholarships of Maren Talcott and Savannah Guillen
(Pride family memorial, attending Washington State University), Evan
Eriksen (attending Cascadia Community College), Heidi Schauble (attending
University of Washington Bothell), and Maddie Williams (graduating from
Cascadia to enroll at University of Washington, Seattle).
In addition, at
University of Washington Bothell, the club awarded a $2,500 renewal to
Michael Deaver for the Marv Workman Memorial Business Scholarship for
upper division business students and the $2,500 Jerry Wilmot Memorial
Scholarship to Carolina Cartier of Bothell in the Masters of Business
Management program. She is a business analyst with Russell Investments.
Proceeds for the Woodinville Rotary scholarships are from the
club�s annual charitable giving program. More funds will be raised at an
October 20, 2012 dinner auction. In its 25th year, the club has
contributed $2,173,000 to community and international programs.
