Purpose...
This scholarship is given in recognition of the
encouragement Pat Matthews of Bothell inspired among her many friends and
associates to pursue education through lifelong learning. The
scholarship is designed to (1) assist a Paraeducator in the Northshore School
District who strives to attain training that will qualify the individual
to become a certified classroom teacher or to be qualified to
advance in their education specialty as required by standards established
for specialized programs.
(2) assist a Northshore School District Staff Member
working toward a masters degree in her or his specific field of
education.
Criteria...
Paraeducator
Candidates should either have (1) at least
three years of experience as a paraeducator in the school district, or (2) have
at least one-year experience as a paraeducator in the school district and
possess a bachelor’s or associate of arts degree in the field of
education. The selection committee will require that candidates present a
proposal detailing how additional education or training will assist them
in meeting their goal to maintain ongoing service or to advance within the
Northshore School District. Specific schooling objectives and desired
results are to be included in the proposal.
Masters Degree
Candidates should have
(1) at least three years of experience teaching in the Northshore district
and (2) are committed to ongoing employment in the Northshore District as
a teacher or administrator.
Letters of recommendation should be included from
individuals with whom the candidate works or has worked in the field of
education.
The scholarship value is $1,500 and is to be used
for tuition and fees as specified in the candidate’s education proposal.
Selection...
Candidates
may be interviewed by a committee to be composed of (1) a member of the
Matthews family, (2) a member of the administrative staff of the
Northshore School District appointed by the superintendent, and (3) the
scholarship chair (or his or her designee) of the Kiwanis Club of
Northshore.
The application period and process shall be conducted concurrent
with the balance of scholarships managed by the Foundation.
2010 Value...
$1,500
Pat Matthews Continuing Education -- The scholarship amount will be $1,500.
It will be
awarded to either
(1)
a Northshore School District Paraeducator who is returning to
college to earn a teaching degree
(Paraeducator Applicants
should have at least 3 years of experience as a paraeducator in the school
district or at least one-year experience as a paraeducator in the school
district and possess a bachelor’s or associate of arts degree in the
field of education); or,
(2)
a Masters Degree Candidate who has had three or more years
experience teaching in the district, is accepted in a program pointing to
a masters degree in her or his specific field of education, and be
committed to ongoing employment within the Northshore School District as a
teacher or administrator.
Applicants
should complete the “Pat Matthews Continuing Education Scholarship
Application” which can be found on the website.
Finalists will be interviewed. Deadline for application submitted
to the Foundation office (address listed above) is March 1, 2010. The
recipient will be notified by May 1.
