The memorial...

Walter E. Sundstrom of Skykomish served as a combat Marine during World War II engaged in the pivotal battle for Guadalcanal.  He held degrees from the University of Washington and University of California where he attended medical school.

Dr. Sundstrom was a founding member of Bothell Medical Clinic (presently named Lakeshore Clinic-Bothell), having arrived earlier in Bothell to practice medicine beginning in 1955. He served as a member and chairman of  the Bothell Planning Commission and was later elected mayor of Bothell serving in the tumultuous 1960s.
While in city government, he led efforts to build a new library and provide a public swimming pool through work with King County and the Forward Thrust program. After his term as mayor, Dr. Sundstrom became active in the adoption of the council-manager form of government for Bothell.

He was an avid outdoorsman, sailor and skier. He and his wife Lois had nine children. Daughter BZ Sundstrom Davis has served a number of years on the Northshore School District board of directors.

Dr. Sundstrom died of cancer in 1973. The Sundstrom scholarship funds became part of this Foundation when it was formed in 1984.
Upon his death the local newspaper, the Northshore Citizen, noted:
"In this age of bystanders, handwringers and bleacher squatters, Walter Sundstrom stood out as a 'super participant' in life. He was one of the rare '100 percenters'...both in private and public life."

The Foundation spends less than the equivalent of .5 per cent of its assets annually to cover annual expenses of its program. All costs with the exception of the Sundstrom asset distribution are paid by the three sponsoring service clubs.
